Over the past three years, IFDA has helped facilitate debate on the need for a national food security strategy to protect business (it’s members) and protect the community. The Australian, through the Global Food Forum, has again provided an opportunity to discuss its importance. Well done to Andrew Henderson for succinctly explaining the threats to both food security and our national security.

I also discussed the challenges in the food industry with Coles’ MD and CEO, Leah Weckert, which was important as we try and navigate the headwinds that confront us. Leah was speaking at the Global Food Forum and said their most recent customer survey in January showed two-thirds of customers were suffering because of the cost of living crisis, and their main concerns were rent and mortgage stress. She also spoke about the impending report from the ACCC on supermarkets. On the costs of business, high energy costs were also impacting Cole’s operations. It was important to meet Leah to ensure we have an open channel of communication when required.
